Brookings Institution: American's belief in capitalism.
November 11, 2013
The Brookings Institution released survey results addressing American's belief in capitalism. I turn to a common issue with survey methodology known as framing. In short, the answer to a question depends on how the question is asked (or framed). With more than just casual interest, I wonder how the results would have differed if the questions had used "free enterprise" instead of "capitalism."
Nonetheless, there were encouraging results. According to the survey summary web page: "Approximately 8-in-10 Americans agree that promoting freedom and liberty, encouraging people to live more responsible lives, and promoting equality and fairness are important guiding values."
I've embedded one of the many illustrations from the study below. You can download the entire report here.
